Euthanasia
The hard decision to let our animal family members go

Sadly, it is a fact of life that many of us will have to face the very hard decision of letting our animal family members go, and putting our pets to sleep can make us feel a multitude of emotions, sometimes feelings of betrayal and guilt.
I would like to offer some comfort, and to try reduce the turmoil and emotional suffering associated with this decision, because it is actually a great kindness in the end to let them go peacefully, and in their own home, with their family.

The human-animal bond is immeasurable, I understand this very well. Throughout my Veterinary career I have helped and supported countless families with end of life care for their beloved pets.
I am inherently empathetic in my nature, and have always naturally wanted to help people and animals, especially to try alleviate suffering.
My role as a Veterinary Surgeon is all encompassing quality of life, and just as importantly, quality of passing.
WHAT
Happens when we
‘put a pet to sleep’?
Peaceful Sedation

I will always sedate your pet first, from experience this just makes everything more peaceful.
A small injection

The sedation is given by a small injection under the skin, a bit like when we administer vaccinations.
Like drifting off to sleep
After a few minutes the sedation will be working and the pets gently drift off to sleep. Then the final injection is given, without the pets awareness.
WHY
Home Pet Euthanasia is the better option
A peaceful passing
The word euthanasia translates to ‘good death’ but this is undoubtedly a very difficult time for pet owners and carers.
A far less traumatic experience

For many people, and animals, a home visit is far less traumatic than travelling to the Clinic.
A familiar enviroment
At home the environment is familiar, undisturbed and calm, and very importantly nothing is rushed.

ABOUT ME
My name is Elizabeth and I grew up on my family’s farm. We have had (and still do have) many family pets, so I whole-heartedly understand the connection and friendship shared with animals. I fully understand the heart-break and grief that is felt when we have to say goodbye, which sadly I have experienced many times.
I qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in 2012. Initially I started work in mixed practice. Then I moved to New Zealand for a few years, working predominantly as a farm vet. When I returned to the UK I returned to working as companion animal vet, with my work progressing to emergency and critical care. I am currently working towards my Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP), which started with some thought provoking course content on the subject of welfare and ethics, including euthanasia and bereavement. Reflecting on this, together with my experiences, I realise the need of people and their pets is so much more than a short appointment at the veterinary clinic.
